The stone is a herkimer quartz diamond which is not actually a diamond but a natural quartz originally discovered in the 18th century when workmen were cutting stone in the Mohawk River Valley, Herkimer, New York and is estimated to be over 500 million years old.

A herkimer diamond possess's double termination points and 18 total faces (six on each point and six around the center). These characteristics result in a high natural sparkle that can only be obtained in faceted diamonds through time-consuming work but the facets on a herkimer quartz diamond are entirely natural. Because they are uncut, untreated and left with their natural faceting, no two are exactly the same. With a value of 7 on Mohs scale, Herkimer, like all quartz, is hard enough for daily wear.
